Martial Arts Keeps Youth Centered

LYNN — If Bruce Lee could do it, these Lynn youth can do it too.

“Some kids were bullying me at school, so I like that I’m learning how to protect myself,” Clefthon Verdieu, 9, said.
Verdieu is one of 12 children who attend a free Wing Chun martial arts class put on by Centerboard Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides family housing services, education and youth programs. Wing Chun is a Chinese-based form of self-defense for close range combat that has been associated with Lee’s famous style of fighting.
The class for children age 9 to 15 is held at Visionspace Gallery every Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. It was initiated by Justice Born, community engagement coordinator, to help teach kids self defense. More than half the students live in family housing. Lynn resident Born has also created many other weekly events, including drum workshops, art classes, break dancing classes and a youth open mic night.
Joseph Castillo, Wing Chun teacher for Centerboard Inc., is the ideal mentor, considering he knows the struggles of an unstable upbringing. He learned the unorthodox style of self-defense from a friend about four years ago.
“I was a disenfranchised youth myself; I didn’t have a mother or father growing up,” Castillo said. “I grew up with my grandmother, and she couldn’t do a lot of things with me, and I got into a lot of trouble as a child. I just want to give back.”
The classes show the children discipline and the awareness to think before they act, he said. Castillo said martial arts is as much a mental activity as a physical pursuit.
“The balance is the main thing in Wing Chun,” he said. “Because it’s about the transfer of energy.”
Jazmin Taylor, 10, showed off her balancing skills and following certain stances. Taylor said she enjoys the judgment free zone, where she can be herself.
“I like making new friends and coming back for the youth open mic at the end of the week,” she said.
The youngsters diligently practiced during the hour class, finally perfecting their poses. They would repeat directions back to Castillo like “palm,” “turn” and “grab.”
Bradley Nicosia, 11, has been to three classes and was focused on each new position he was taught. Nicosia said he has learned to block better.
“I’d be able to get someone into some sort of lock instead of physically harming them,” he said.
Born plans to continue the class through the fall. Adult classes for Wing Chun are also offered every Tuesday at Visionspace for $15 per person, per class. To register or for more information, call 339-883-2422.

Paranom - "All Ideas Subliminal" Music Video from the "777" EP Produced by Al Divino

Paying homage to Nas by reformatting his No Ideas Original song produced by Alchemist, Massachusetts MC Paranom has taken the original to a new revamped level. His latest video "All Ideas Subliminal", which is actually a bonus offering from the brand new EP entitled "777" which released on New Years Eve, speaks for itself. Collaborating with filmmaker Cahl Benecchi, the video enlightens his lyrics of genius innuendoes and sheds the light on them all with vivid and blatant imagery. The video exposes the context showing the pain, pleasure, trials, tribulations, thoughts and expressions that reflect Paranom's life, aesthetics and ideas. Skillfully weaving through the classic instrumental with a high level flow and lyrical dexterity, this track is sure to generate multiple replays by avid Hip-Hop listeners.

About Paranom:With a soulful sound akin to the likes of John Coltrane meets Black Thought and Nas, Paranom is an MC who seems to have appeared at just the right time; adding onto the slew of new up and coming artists who are bringing a sense of renaissance to the current state of Hip-Hop with his raw but smooth vocalization over melodic, hard-hitting beats.

At 26 years of age, this Lynn Massachusetts based, current resident of Brockton MC has released projects both via retail and online avenues that have gained underground notoriety. As a member of Wreck Shop Movement and 1/4 of the group Tragic Allies, Paranom released the critically acclaimed album "Life Outside The Frame" on Ill Adrenaline Records in 2013, produced by Purpose of the same group in mention. With the single "Microphone Phenomenal" reaching #3 on the MTV Germany Urban Charts, as well as a European tour with Wu-Tang's Killah Priest, Paranom along with the rest of the Tragic Allies are steadily on a worldwide rise.

Wreck Shop Movement & Tragic Allies return to Lynn roots @ The Formula April 11th

3/30/2014

Picture
Wreck Shop Movement returns to their roots at a new venue in the city of Lynn, birthplace of this expanding and evolving Hip Hop Movement. The Formula continues to unite the community and showcase the positive aspects of progressive Hip-Hop culture, making resource drives (food & clothing) for the homeless a part of every event. This month non-perishable food items can be donated at The Formula, benefiting My Brother’s Table at the Lynn shelter. This event had taken place at venues in Boston, Quincy, Beverly, Peabody and now The Fenix Discotec in Lynn, the home of the headliners, bar-heavy boom bap globetrotters Tragic Allies.
Picture
Tragic Allies, emerging leaders of the independent Hip Hop scene locally and nationally, return for a rare hometown performance after having recently expanded their reach across international waters. The Lynn crew, along with new crew member Paranom, recently returned from tour with Wu-Tang’s Killah Priest in Europe. While the crew's alliance has clearly helped them eclipse the sum of their parts and take a strong lead in the Hip Hop scene, any of the supporting acts at this edition of The Formula could easily step into that headlining role.

Sharing the bill with the Tragic Allies are New England Hip Hop representatives Golden Brown Sound, Relentless, Dirty Durdie, Oracle Thought, and Wreck Shop DJ G7 will be holding it down with a wealth of highly potent words and sounds all evening. DJ Mac will be in the house spinning breaks for the B-Boy cipher. Lynn’s resident wordsmith and wiseman Big Brotha Sadi will be guiding us on this journey through the sacred art of Hip Hop music. The show doesn’t stop at music though, featuring locally designed clothing, visual art, and food from Paaastelitos and Original Hip Hop Chocolates. Live painting by Jeremy Harrison of Black Feet Images and DaArtistZNT who will also be showcasing and selling art. Clothing for sale by Evil Genius Industries.

Haze of Main Aim launches new website!

Born Xavier Andreu in the early 1980’s in Southbridge, MA, Haze was first introduced to hip hop in the mid 1990’s. Albums such as Resurrection By Common Sense and Illmatic by Nas we’re his earliest inspirations. The productions of The Beatnuts, Pete Rock, The D.I.T.C crew as well as DJ Premier molded his taste in beats: melodic samples and tough drums.

Although his main influences are from the 1990’s and early 2000’s he realizes you have to move along with the times That’s not to say you’ll hear him using auto-tune any time soon – it means he knows we’re in an era where you have to update old formulas. You can’t use the same flow on every song; you can’t rhyme over filtered bass-lines and horn stabs any more. He wants to move the culture forward without straying too far from his roots and the foundation that was laid before him. Haze respects hip hop and its forefathers and aims to be named among the greatest lyricists of all time.

An observant writer, Haze’s lyrics tackle social issues, single-parent upbringings, racism, racial identity and the occasional political rant.

Picture
His debut album The Offering was released in December of 2012 with many blogs picking it up through word of mouth. A string of videos released earlier in 2012 built him a strong buzz and has led to requests for guest appearances from all around the world.

His frequent collaborators include Josh Bliss Lighten, Aperiod (who along with Haze form Main Aim), Paranom (of The Tragic Allies) DJ Manipulator, Louie Gonz, Busted Fuse, DJ Bobby Milk, Elijah Divine and Evilldewer.

Haze hasn’t reached his peak yet. He’s always striving to perfect his craft, whether it’s song structure, breath control, delivery or finding the best production he can – he’s working hard at all times.
